1. Measuring Tape

Accuracy is key in DIY and interior design. A sturdy, retractable measuring tape is your best friend when it comes to purchasing new furniture, cutting materials to size, or simply rearranging your space. Opt for a tape that measures at least 8 metres to cover all the bases from small trinkets to larger furniture pieces.

2. Level

A level ensures everything hangs straight, from artwork to shelves. While traditional spirit levels work great, consider a laser level for larger projects. This tool projects straight lines across walls or floors, which is a boon for installing wallpaper or laying tiles evenly.

3. Utility Knife

For all your cutting needs, a sharp utility knife with replaceable blades is indispensable. Whether you’re trimming wallpaper, cutting fabric, or opening boxes, make sure your utility knife feels comfortable in your hand and offers easy blade change.

4. Hammer

A medium-weight hammer will serve you well in most home projects. It’s essential for basic tasks like hanging pictures or assembling furniture. Pair it with a set of nails and picture-hanging hooks of various sizes to handle most attaching tasks.

5. Screwdrivers

A set of screwdrivers with various head sizes is crucial. For maximum flexibility, look for a set that includes both Phillips and flat-head types. Consider investing in a ratcheting screwdriver with interchangeable heads for extra efficiency.

6. Adjustable Wrench

An adjustable wrench is particularly useful for plumbing tasks, like updating tapware or fixing a leaky pipe. Its versatility makes it a better choice over fixed wrenches since it can adjust to various nut sizes.

7. Pliers

Needle-nose pliers, locking pliers, and side-cutting pliers should cover most of your needs. They’re great for twisting wires, pulling out nails, or holding objects firmly in place.

8. Electric Drill and Drill Bits

An electric drill not only saves time but also provides precision. Invest in a set of quality drill bits to pair with your drill. Ensure you have various sizes and types suited for different materials, including wood, metal, and masonry.

9. Sander

For any project involving wood, a sander is essential to smooth out surfaces and edges. A good orbital sander can make the job quicker and less labour-intensive than sanding by hand.

10. Painter’s Tape

When painting, painter’s tape is invaluable for protecting surfaces and achieving clean, sharp lines. It’s less adhesive than regular tape, preventing damage to walls and surfaces when removed. It’s also a great asset when figuring out the size and position of furniture, wall units, and pictures. Just apply the painter’s tape to the position and size of the object. And it won’t leave a mark when removed.

11. Paint Brushes and Rollers

Invest in a range of paint brushes and rollers to suit different tasks. Include small brushes for trim work and larger rollers for walls. Remember, the quality of your brushes and rollers can greatly affect the finish of your paint job.

12. Stud Finder

A stud finder is critical for safely mounting heavy objects on your walls. It helps you find the sturdy parts of the wall to drill into, preventing damage that can come from mounting on hollow or unsupported areas.

13. Safety Gear

Never overlook the importance of safety. Basic safety gear should include goggles, gloves, and ear protection, especially when using power tools. Also, keep a first aid kit handy in your work area.

14. Ladder

A sturdy ladder is a must-have, enabling safe access to high places. A step ladder is often sufficient for indoor projects, but for higher engagements, an extendable ladder might be necessary.

15. Toolbox

Lastly, keep all your tools organized and easily accessible with a robust toolbox. Opt for one that’s spacious and durable, with compartments for smaller items like screws and nails.
